Daily Maintenance of Circular Arc Gear Pumps for Chemical Transfer Applications

Circular Arc Gear Pumps are widely used in chemical processing industries for transferring lubricants, solvents, resins, fuel oils, thermal oils, and various non-corrosive or mildly corrosive liquids. Due to the demanding operating conditions found in chemical plants, including continuous operation, elevated temperatures, pressure fluctuations, and exposure to aggressive media, regular maintenance is essential to ensure safe operation, stable performance, and extended equipment life.

Importance of Routine Maintenance

Proper daily maintenance helps prevent unexpected failures, reduces downtime, and improves the overall reliability of the pumping system. Early detection of wear, leakage, vibration, or abnormal operating conditions can significantly reduce repair costs and prevent secondary equipment damage.

A structured maintenance program should be implemented and documented to ensure that inspections are performed consistently.

Daily Operational Inspection

Operators should inspect the pump before and during operation. Particular attention should be given to pressure, flow rate, temperature, vibration, and noise levels.

Any sudden change in discharge pressure or flow rate may indicate internal wear, blockage, cavitation, or leakage within the system. Abnormal noises such as knocking, grinding, or rattling should be investigated immediately.

The pump housing and connected pipelines should be checked for visible leaks, corrosion, or mechanical damage. Even minor leakage around seals or flanges may develop into more serious failures if left unattended.

Lubrication and Bearing Care

Proper lubrication is critical for maintaining smooth operation of bearings and rotating components. Operators should verify that lubrication systems are functioning correctly and that lubricant levels remain within the recommended range.

Lubricants should be replaced according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. Contaminated or degraded lubricants can accelerate bearing wear, increase operating temperatures, and reduce equipment reliability.

Bearing temperatures should also be monitored regularly. Excessive heat may indicate insufficient lubrication, misalignment, overloading, or bearing deterioration.

Seal and Leakage Inspection

Mechanical seals and shaft seals are among the most important components in chemical transfer applications. Daily inspection should focus on detecting leakage, seal face wear, and signs of chemical attack.

Small leaks around the sealing area often serve as early warning signs of seal failure. Prompt corrective action can prevent product loss, environmental contamination, and unplanned shutdowns.

When handling hazardous chemicals, seal integrity should be monitored with particular care to maintain operational safety.

Fluid Cleanliness and Filtration

Maintaining clean process fluid is essential for protecting gears, bushings, bearings, and sealing surfaces. Filters and strainers should be inspected regularly and cleaned or replaced as necessary.

Contaminants such as rust particles, dirt, metal debris, and process residues can cause abrasive wear and increase internal leakage. Effective filtration significantly extends pump service life and improves operating efficiency.

Periodic Preventive Maintenance

In addition to daily inspections, periodic maintenance should include alignment checks, vibration analysis, clearance measurements, and inspection of gears, shafts, and bearings.

Keeping accurate maintenance records allows operators to identify performance trends and schedule repairs before major failures occur. A proactive maintenance strategy helps maximize reliability, improve safety, and extend the service life of Circular Arc Gear Pumps used in chemical transfer systems.
